The Son of Man (1964)
Oil on canvas, 116 x 89 cm
In the Summer of 1963, Harry Torczyner commissioned this work and the artist delivered it to him in August 1964. Torczyner had asked Magritte to paint a self-portrait in the spirit of the self-portraits of two Flemish painters, Rubens and Ensor, on which the artists are portrayed with a hat on. The Belgium poetess and prominent member of the Belgium surrealist movement, Irène Hamoir, came up with the title of this work.
This is a sculpture of 9 cm high, made after the painting of Magritte.
