Composition with large red plane, yellow, black, grey and blue (1921)
This composition is one of the principal works of what Mondrian referred to as Neoplasticism.
In 1920, Mondrian published ‘Le Néo-plasticisme’, a booklet in which he attempted to provide further theoretic grounding for his ideas. He elaborated on his prior publications in the renowned magazine ‘De Stijl’ about his ‘new imaging’ as he denoted his work.
‘Composition with a large red plane […]’ still has a relatively high number of coloured planes. Over the years, these would disappear as he searched for the right rhythm and perfect balance.
