During the fin-de-siècle, the ‘Wiener Sezession’ was formed by a group headed by Moser, Hoffmann and Klimt. It was literally a secession (= split) from the traditional Wiener Künstlerhaus. The mostly young artists wanted to create their own version of the Jugendstil, as others had already done in Munich and Berlin. The Wiener Sezession led to the 1903 formation of the Wiener Werkstätte, a workshop for applied art that aimed to reconcile the fine and applied arts.
